The Kinks had a number of incredibly successful singles. They also had some utter flops, many more than other, established big groups particularly as the sixties became the seventies and they remained wilfully eccentric and set themselves against the prevailing fashions of their times with their resolute Little Englishness. Here are some of their misses. Generally it's perfectly clear why they were not smashes but occasionally perhaps they should have been.
1. Wonder Where My Baby Is
Amongst their early big hits was this. It did nothing.
2.Starstruck
From the Village Green Preservation society. Nice!
3. Village Green Preservation Society
Also you'll be surprised to know from that album
4. Shangri-La
Now this should have been huge. A masterpiece.
5. Drivin'
The world is fightin'. We're going drivin'. Any song that mentions gooseberry tart and Potter's Bar is perhaps not on its way to Number One.
6. God's Children
Another wonderful song. Made Number 53 in Australia.
7. Supersonic Rocket Ship
OK it got to Number 16. But it's so plain odd I had to post it here.
8. Sitting in the Midday Sun
9. Mirror of Love
Mirror of love? Getting into Spinal Tap territory. You really don't need to listen to this. You'll never get that three minutes of your life back.
10. Ducks on the Wall
Now this is just plain dreadful. It seems pretty clear that the great Ray Davies was going through something just awful at this point in his career
