The Ramones CBGB 1974

There's precious little filmed documentation of the early years of CBGBs. This makes it an incredible lost space, occupied by a few magazine articles, recordings, photos and the transcribed and untranscribed memories of those who were there. This clip does exist however. And it's a remarkable document. The band haven't yet settled on their uniformed look. Dee Dee and Johnny are on opposite sides of the stage from the ones they eventually settled on. Joey appears to be drunk and his vocals can barely be heard. Only Johnny's waves of noise and belligerent expression seem to be fully intact in terms of the formula that would come to change a considerable and deeply important part of the world over the next five years. With Scott Asheton's passing yesterday, the message seems fairly clear. Too many old Punks dying!
