Nice frock!
Still the Rock writer for me! He captures all the romance, the glory, the sleaze, glamour and decay better than anybody else. Some would go for Lester Bangs but I think Kent is a better communicator and stylists at this remove. In his recent memoir Apathy For The Devil he includes an appendix where he lists the songs that soundtracked his life in each of the years of the '70s. His decade.
Here's 1970:
1.The Grateful Dead - Dark Star
You might choose not to listen to it all. It's 23 minutes long.
2. Soft Machine - Facelift
This meanwhile is 18 minutes!
3. Syd Barrett - Golden Hair
4. The Byrds - Chestnut Mare
5. Tim Buckley - Monterey
6. David Crosby - Laughing
Kent chose the whole album If I Could Only Remember My Name
7. Neil Young - When You Dance I Can Really Love
8. The Stooges - Loose
'The sound of the '70s baying at the door'. Again Kent chose the whole album Funhouse.
9. The Mothers of Invention - Directly From My Heart To You
10. Plastic Ono Band - God
Again, Kent selected the whole album.
Please read Kent's great book for his comments on each track / album. I plan to list his selections from each year once a week.
