San Francisco Lo-Fi legend (according to his own hype), Tony Jay provides Bobby Gillespie leather troosers wet dream record of the year with Perfect Worlds. Released on Slumberland Records, a natural home for this kind of Rock & Roll fantasy undertaking, though really Jay is clearly the Creation artist who was born too late to put out a record on the label irself.
Perfect Worlds and Jay tick all of the requisite boxes damned quickly. Then go round and tick them all again just in case you didn't notice. This man has clearly spent a lot of time listening to The Velvet Underground, not that there's anything wrong with that. Wandering round town in black, squinting through shades and wearing ludicrous pointy Chelsea boots and tight fitting leather trousers. Making records where he doesn't sing exactly but emotes through an opium fug in the hope that someoneat the lip of the stage will mutter, 'Lou is that you.'
Anyone who likes The Velvets, Suicide and Bobby G is more than likely to warm to this. It's a fine homage iwith incredible attention to detail if nothing else. Full of those droning organ effects that make you feel that you're on the New York metro late at night and might not make it home this time.
These aren't the greatest somgs ever written but their aim is true and from the heart .It' creates and sustains a wonerful mood.Put a saucer down for the cat, get your headphones on and imagine you're heading downtown for a night at CBGB's in '77 later on. A record that will be liked by the people that like the stuff that Tony and his pals clearly love..
