Albums of the Year # 10 The Finks - Birthdays at Solo Pasta

Darren Jones strikes again. This blogs most resolute and staunchest supporter arrived with three genius tips on a Friday morning before I headed off to Nottingham for a couple of days with old friends.

I'll write about all three in the next couple of days but I have to start here. With The Finks, one of Australia's best kept secrets. They're from Melbourne, you'll be surprised to hear. Melbourne is currently the planet's musical Emerald City. The gift that keeps on giving.
.

The Finks play the songs of Oliver Mestitz, their guiding troubled genius. He doesn't sing all their songs but I think he writes them all and they're heard at their best on their latest record. Birthdays at Solo Pasta.

The songs here appreciate Nick Drake. They appreciate The Velvet Underground at their quietest and their most beautiful and fragile. They appreciate The Go Betweens. They know that the world can be at its most beautiful when it's slightly sad.

Birthdays at Solo Pasta has landed high as a new entry on my Albums of the Year rundown for 2023 which I'll probably start soon as I've got nothing better to do. The Finks are a thing of beauty and they need to be appreciated. It's often the quiet ones. Good work Darren. As always.
