Pale Blue Eyes - Souvenirs

Souvenirs the debut  album from Newquays finest Pale Blue Eyes tries to pull off an odd trick. It marries the Stereolab sensibility with that of early OMD, from the early Eighties when they decided that they wouldn't mind some more hit singles rather than opting for cult territory. Hey, the record is called Souvenirs.

This contrary urge, the pull between art and pop continues throughout the record . It's a strange beast to be honest. Young Indie bands need to make some money these days and appeal to the likes of 6 Music. There aren't too many meals to be had out on the fringes.

Souvenirs is a good record but it can't really make up its mind what it wants to be. The Pop bits are good, without ever coming close Electricity, Souvenir itself or Enola Gay. The best bits on display are the Arty flourishes.
