Song of the Day # 2,714 Olivia Rodrigo

It's now July and it seems clear that some basic themes for the year musically have already emerged. Critically lauded Post Punk bands who revere Gang of Four and The Fall. Great, slinky, soulful music from the UK and London in particular that says The UK is a multicultural society whether you like it or not.

Also, great use of 'found sounds'. Doja Cat making the hook in Olivia Newton John's Physical sound like a very, very good thing indeed. Now another Olivia, Olivia Rodrigo, gleefully swiping the riff from Elvis Costello's Pump It Up on brutal, the opening track on her debut album SOUR.

Costello has already endorsed this. Courtney Love apparently is not so keen on Rodrigo's magpie instincts. That's very Punk Rock of you Courtney. I also hear a bit of another Courtney, Courtney Barnett, in brutal, and that to my ears is also a very good thing. This is surely one of the best songs of 2021. The rest of the record is also highly skilled and nuanced, but not so down my particular street as this is. The kids know best. The kids are alright.
