85. The Eastern Dark
'Julie says she loves me...'
Australian eighties band. Offshoot from The Celibate Rifles. The love for The Ramones is unashamed. Live version above. Here's a link to vinyl.
84. Weezer
'When I'm stable long enough. I start to look around for love...'
Weezer definitely did a fair bit of Power Pop. Everybody went to school with people like this band. Amazingly, they found a way to stay there. While I don't ever want to spend too much time in their world, I'm rather glad it exists.
83. Wilco
'I know, you don't talk much but you're such a good talker. I know, we should take a walk but you're such a fast walker.'
Among the very handful of best American bands of the last thirty years. Here they do their Big Star thing. Impeccable!
82. Squeeze
'The case was pulled from under the bed. She made a call to a sympathetic friend and made arrangements.'
Across the pond for a bit more English. Squeeze had a few songs that fit this slot. Here's one.
81. Chris Stamey
'When I walk down the street. Pavement slapping my feet...'
Chris Stamey will feature again later on here. With the dBs, the band he subsequently. This is the single he made for Ork Records in 1977. Some extraordinary sounds on here from Stamey and his band along with the song itself. Produced by Alex Chilton who of course more is also coming from further down this track.
