Outside, it's snowing in Central Newcastle. Inside this series on the blog it's still snug and warm. Here's the next part of the countdown.
70. Stiv Bators
'I'm the ghoul king of a million lost souls.'
From the famously rodent featured front-man of Dead Boys and Lords of the New Church. This comes from his 1980 album Disconnected which is more Power Pop than Punk powered. This song perhaps less than some of the others on that record but it's good to get some authentic street grime in this chart.
69. The Photos
'When she doesn't get her way, she cries. When she's got nothing to say, she lies...'
Birmingham based New Wave band who had their brief moment in the British spotlight in the early eighties. Don't like the sound of this Irene girl though.
68. The Lemonheads
'He kinda shoulda sorta would have loved her if he coulda...'
Much of The Lemonheads wonderfully apt and concise breakthrough album, It's a Shame About Ray, qualifies as Power Pop. This makes that case as well as any song on there.
67. Bram Tchaikovsky
'Judy was an American girl. She came in the morning with the US mail...'
A classic example of the genre, both in terms of its sound and sentiments. Bram was originally in The Motors, already featured here. This was an American Top 40 hit in 1979.
66. The Jam
'Rainclouds came and stole my heart. Left me barren like a desert...'
The Jam were deservedly huge in the UK at least. This doesn't mean that many of their songs don't fit fairly neatly in this category although the lyrics and arrangements are often more sophisticated and complex than many of the other songs on here. I could have picked any number of things to make this point. This was the one I felt like listening to right now.
