75. The Scruffs
'I love fun. You're no fun...'
Hardly The Stooges or The Pistols though there's an echo of Pretty Vacant's riff here before it transmutes into Big Star, particularly in the vocal delivery which owes more than a handful of dollars to Alex Chilton's way of doing things. Still, a glorious melodic break. From Memphis too appropriately where Big Star had also been based and their sole album, 1977's Wanna Meet The Scruffs?
74. The Replacements
'Call me on Thursday, if you will. Call me on Wednesday, better still...' (but the whole lyric is great)
And on to more affirmed Chilton devotees. They even wrote a song about him. One of the truly great American bands of the eighties. Pioneers. And their now legendary 1983 album Let It Be. Peter Buck of R.E.M. guests on the ringing guitar break.
73. The Tourists
'When everybody says hello. You know there's nowhere else to go...'
Before Annie and Dave were The Eurythmics.
72. The Posies
'Can I crawl into your bones and make my home...'
Archetypal nineties Power Poppers. They went on to back Big Star who get their third mention in four selections as we close in on the top seventy. The Posies sprang from Bellingham, WA.
71. The Jags
'You only come here if you're feeling blue...'
Almost the definition of One Hit Wonders. This ransacks as many of Costello's moves as it can in three minutes and rushes off to the charts and bank with them. Great song nevertheless! Hit Number 17 in the UK charts in 1979.
