100 Power Pop Songs Countdown # 65- 61

65. Holly & The Italians

'You'd better tell that girl to shut up. You'd better tell that girl I'm gonna beat her up...'

Unfortunately maligned by Transvision Vamp's entirely unnecessary and opportunist cover version a few years later. Should have been left well enough alone. Apologies for the Jerry Springer show fight clips above. It was the only direct link available.

64. The Adult Net

'There's peace in the waves..'

Towards more peaceful territory. Brix Smith. One time member of The Fall and wife of Mark E. Smith during their Poppiest phase. There are all kinds of men in the video here who don't resemble him in the remotest respect which gives the impression that the band, or at least their label were not aiming at the niche, indie market.

63. Gigolo Aunts

'Hey Monday morning is only for the brave. And the blood flows through my heart and leaves as I shave...'

Fairly much nails the form in every respect. Potsdam, New York band who hit the jackpot with this by getting it included on the Dumb & Dumber soundtrack.

62. The Romantics

'What I like about you...' (most of the lyric is utter gibberish!)

I'm not entirely sure I approve of mass-orchestrated clapping on records, but these people are having a good time and thats not yet been declared illegal although it may be on the cards the way things are going. The Romantics are Power Pop staples and they're from Detroit so given the fine harmonica break in the middle of the song perhaps they deserve the benefit of the doubt.

61. The Soft Boys

'In this horrible world of age and decay. It's good to know someone's looking OK...'

The Soft Boys are generally too off the wall for Power Pop, which is generally a simpler art-form. This though is concise, (it's two minutes and one second long), and pure enough to fit. Another hit record in an alternative universe.
