100 Power Pop Songs Countdown 80-76

So much of Power Pop is associated with sunshine that it becomes increasingly incongruous to be writing it as December spreads and darkens here in Newcastle. But here goes with the next slot of the countdown.

80. Summer Suns

'Walking down the streets so lonely...'

This reiterates my point. Classic Power Pop from start to finish. Perth band. Late eighties and early nineties. Is that The Byrds singing?

79. The Stems

'All I had to do was look at you at first sight..'

More folk from Perth. I imagine there's a specific term for people from there but I'm at a loss for the moment for what it is. In the meantime, here's the song.

78. Emmitt Rhodes

'Ask and you'll receive...'

Early seventies singer-songwriter who had considerable record company and critical heft behind him for a while. Much love for McCartney here.

77. The Go-Betweens

'Driving my first car. My elbow's in the breeze...'

Back again to Australia. This time to Brisbane and the founding fathers of this blog. May not be Power Pop strictly but I've heard this song mentioned as such on various blogs and I'm more than happy to shoe-horn it in here.

76. The La's

'The melody chords unwinds me. The rhythm of life unties me...'

And to Liverpool where so much of this started from. And The La's wonderful first album. There She Goes Again is often cited as their classic Power Pop moment. I've always preferred this!
