Now here's something great. All female band from Dunedin, New Zealand who were on the legendary The Flying Nun Record Label and released three fine EPs on it in the mid-eighties and then were gone. The records will now cost you a pretty penny.
They're a clutch of beautifully formed, lovingly recorded set of songs which are right up there with the very best records from that wonderful stable of Flying Nun bands. Flowing and melodic and full of youth and democracy and love of different kinds. Somewhat reminiscent of that great set of records being released by The Chills in the same period, though with little or none of that band's occasional darkness, the songs ebb and flow with echoes of British Folk from the early seventies but you also get the sense that the band capture something of the unique New Zealand pastoral landscape, (not that I've ever or am likely ever to go there), and way of life.
They also illustrate one of the great backstories of Rock and Roll music. Do what you've got to do, say what you have to say and get out and do something else. Most of the band are now locked in ordinary nine to fives like you and me. But they'll always have these wonderful records to their name.
Look Blue Go Purple, I can't entirely applaud their name, but will more than happily endorse the records. Fine way to start a weekend!
