Song(s) of the Day # 3,560 John Frances Flynn

Dark twisted Gothic Folk. 2023 has been a year where it has reared its head and made itself known. Lankum, Lisa O'Neill, and Alaisdair Roberts have all put out excellent records and got more notice and acclaim then previously. Richard Dawson is generally around somewhere. Being Richard.

This stuff, like anything else can become a bit too ubiquitous and samey after a while. Just as the influence of The Fall and Nick Cave, two of the most singular voices in Rock & Roll can be slightly tiresome now that their brand is becoming so commonplace. I'm of a natural disposition to be slightly suspicious when artists of a certain sort starts to collect in packs.

The new John Frances Flynn album Look Over The Wall See The Sky is splendid but does give off immediate signals of Dark twisted Gothic Folk. Of Lankum and Lisa, Alasdair and Richard. You may have had your fill for 2023.

If you've room for another serving this might be down your street.Flynn's voice has a gorgeous and nuanced Irish burr. 'Uncover emotional force and surrealism in traditional songs,' as the marketing blurb suggests. Come on. You know you want to...
