Another new day. Another great new record. And it's only Valentine's Day. I'm astonished with what 2023 has had to offer music wise already. Long may it continue. L.A artist, Sunny War (She finds herself back in Nashville now where she spent her early youth), has already featured a number of times on this blog down the years. Anarchist Gospel, her latest, seems likely to be the one where she steps out of the shadows and into the daylight where she belongs.
She's a fascinating artist. Aligned to the early hobo and beat tradition. Woody and Bob. With a history of homelessness and radical politics that have always given her a definite Punk edge indicating spiritual connections with X, Bad Brains and Minutemen, (which she alludes to on her own website) even though her voice and stylings have always reminded me more of the warmth and intimacy of Joan Armatrading whose voice she certainly recalls.
The songs on Anarchist Gospel have a marimba echoey quality that made me think of the Deep South. This is Americana. Bars, motels, beaches, the open road. Harmonica, gospel, campfires. That whole thing. She fits these shoes like Cinderella.
She's so confident of her voice and authority all this time in. She's on a new label, New West, which has the Roots and muscle which might allow her to make the critical and commercial dent she's long deserved. I hope so. The record glows with abundant talent, fight and love. Love's junkie and addict. Her own words.
