From a Bomp Magazine cover
'It goes without saying that The Standells are one of the most important groups of all time. No pre-66 group from LA could ever compare with them except The Seeds and there were few anywhere who could approach their faultless distillation of all that made up "punk" style - Stones riffs, taunting vocals, vicious lyrics, burning fuzztone, everything right down to the black turtlenecks was absolutely archetypal. They were one of the first punk groups, along with The Kingsmen and The Raiders, and one of the longest lived as well.' Greg Shaw.
1. Sometimes Good Guys Don't Wear White
2. Try It
3. Dirty Water (about Boston and a Boston sporting anthem even though the band had never visited the city before they released it. Their single Top 40 hit)
4. Riot On Sunset Strip (here's the intro to the film of the same name)
5. Why Pick On Me (very 'Mother's Little Helper' or Kinks)
End verdict: somewhat samey after listening exclusively through to them this afternoon. But these five stand up.
