Matthew Sweet's record is a fabulous bittersweet album in the best sense that I'd never heard before this morning. He moved to Athens, Georgia in the Eighties because it seemed like a good thing to do. He set off in the Nineties with his third studio album Girlfriend.
It fearures Richard Lloyd and Robert Quine which helps explain why it sounds so good. It breathes in The Beatles and exhales Big Star, Television and R.E.M. It's a Powerpop record really in the classic sense but that's not remotely a criticism. Quite the opposite. That's Tuesday Weld on the cover of the record. Your Girlfriend? In your dreams.
