The strange cast of oddball characters of The Dwarves of Death assemble onstage. Coe draws up a set of particularly memorable losers here. A band called Alaska Factory in rehearsal that sound so shambolic and utterly inept that they seem doomed to failure from the start. A studio engineer who sounds like he needs a long stretch inside purely on the basis of his ghastly manners and behaviour. A housing estate that has all of London's most grisly underclass, criminal characteristics. Meatloaf's Bat Out Of Hell gets a mention so you get a momentary respite from Morrissey today. It may not sound immediately like it, but it's all gently funny, and tougher and more bitingly satirical than it appears on the surface. The scene is set.
