Songs About People # 148 Patti Smith & Robert Maplethorpe

'She steps out into the emptiness, by picking up a pen...'

One of the great romantic and poetic friendships. Which reminds me, if I needed reminding that I should re-read Patti's wonderful memoir Kids, about their time and experiences together. This is a tribute to them from a very talented singer-songwriter called Mason Jennings who I chanced upon a couple of days ago. Not able to post it directly on here but here's a link I suggest you press. Here's Mason describing meeting Patti herself.

' I met Patti Smith backstage at Carnegie Hall. I'd just finished singing a Neil Young song at a Neil Young tribute. I was feeling like really insecure, I thought I might have sung the song too slow. And then all of a sudden I felt somebody tugging at my sleeve. It was a woman who worked at Carnegie Hall and she said 'Patti Smith is asking for you and I was like, 'What!'. So I walked down this hallway and met with Patti and she was just really, really sweet and smiley which I didn't know about Patti, how smiley she'd be. And she was just really kind and complimentary about the song I'd done. And this is a song I wrote about her and her relationship with Robert Maplethorpe.'
