1984 Singles # 8 Bronski Beat

'You leave in the morning with everything you own in a little black case,,,'

The Eighties were a breakthrough decade if you were gay or lesbian as well as being incredibly tough. The Murdoch press were savage and condemning. Coming Out was a big deal and many preferred not to do so and who could blame them. This was often the case with highly public figures. Rock Hudson. Freddie Mercury. George Michael.

Jimmy Sommerville was upftont about who he was right from the start.  Bronski Beat's debut Smalltown Boy remains an incredible song and statement that meant everything to many. You just need to listen to the lyrics, The tune is something else.
