While I wait to see what 2024 has to offer. It's sensible to be patient, January of course is a notoriously slow news month. Meanwhile.I'll occupy myself with the clean up for the tail end of 2023. What do we think of Bleach Lab's debut album, the glumly but evocatively entitled Lost in a Rush of Emptiness.Hints of six form poetry.
The South London band are happy to embrace the oft used umbrella term 'Dream Pop'. On the band's Spotify homepage they are pictured facing down the camera seated in a London Underground carriage and the record offers echoes of a December morning commute from the arteries of the city into the heart of London. It's all a bit bleak, cold and slightly remote frankly.
Not to say a mite generic. This kind of morose hinterland projection kicked off decades ago with The Cure most obviously. Elsewhere Slowdive, Alvvays and even The Cranes play peek a boo around the curtains. The spectre of Goth.
You know what you're getting almst immeediately and despite its good songs and atmosphere Bleach Lab never quite entirely become themselves. A good record. I suspect the next one will be better.
