Song of the Day # 3,612 The Rosehips

Far be it for me to generate free publicity for Spotify. They hardly need it. I must say though  find the whole discussion that surrounds the platform slighly complex and far more nuanced than those who pitch in with their pennorth worth always allow.

I consider myself a supporter of music. I think the existence of this blog is evidence of this. I don't use advertising on here to extend It Starts profile and allow it to be more broadly read. Obviously I would like what I write to be read by as many people as possible. That's why people write. But I won't have advertising.

I consume most of my music on Spotify. This is the way most people I know consume their music these days. That doesn't mean they are not supportive of music or musicians. I find the very idea of that preposterous. End of sermon.

Anyway, I've digressed before I've even got onto my subject matter for today. The Rosehips. The other day I was listening to a computer generated Spotify playlist focused on C-86 type stuff. I imagine anyone vaguely conversant in this subgenre could pretty much recreate it given the briefest thought.

Primal Scream, Velocity Girl. Weather Prophets, Almost Prayed. Soup Dragons, Whole Wild World. Those guys. Those songs. I was thoroughly enjoying myself I must say.

Then suddenly a song that seemed inspired by this whole scene and discourse though it came almost twenty years further down the line. The Rosehips and their 2008 self title and from what I can see, only album. Listening through to it now they seem as much inspired by Smashing Pumpkins and Veruca Salt as The Wolfhounds and that lot.

I can find out nothing more about the band though to flesh out this post. Decent record though. Worthwhile way to spend 30 minutes as the sun rises in my parents house on a Canterbury avenue, a week into a new year.

  1. I think there was actually a C86 band at the time called The Rosehips, although this is a different band. Definitely more 90s influences. Like you, I listen to most things on Spotify. I do buy downloads on Bandcamp to try to support bands directly, but still listen on Spotify!
