500 Greatest Albums of the 1980s ... Ranked! # 498 Prefab Sprout - From Langley Park To Memphis

I love Steve McQueen. Of course I do. I do not love this. Yet at least. I don't know it yet as well as I would like to.  I don't know it at all apart from a couple of slightly irritating hit singles that don't touch me as much as earlier ones do.

I need to get to know the record better and then I'm sure I will take to it. Without having gone through that necessary process I'm still not versed with the way it works. Nothing has moved me like early work yet.

I don't understand Paddy's conceit often here. What he's aiming at. There are some fine songs here which probably would have graced McQueen but in general it feels he is retreading areas he has previously done better. I detect going through the motions more in a state of the art studio.

I leave this for the moment to Sprout devotees. I salute his genius but don't need this. My great love at the time of its release liked to chant 'Hot Dog, Jumping Frog Albuqerque...' this is my happiest prsonal memory of this phase of their career. I will come back and listen again.
