1984 Singles # 43 Julian Cope

'I can see the contours in your face....'

The prospects for Julian Cope's solo career did not look auspicious given the sorry nature of The Teardrop Explodes' disolution in.the tail end of 1982. See his memoir Head On for squalid specifics. Julian seemed altogether too scarred, damaged weird, and drug addled to give much hope for him remaining out of sedation or care never mind his prospects for a return to public prominence or the charts. Not to mention Daytime Radio heavy rotation and guest appearances on Wogan of all places.

How wrong appearances could be . Those that wrote the man off so completely, But Cope was first of all a far smarter and wilier chraracter than frankly anybody ever gave him credit for. But before his full renaissance with 1986's Saint Julian, first the classic debut solo album World Shut Your Mouth (the single of the same name came later). which gave Kevin Ayers, Kevin Coyne, Ivor Cutler  and Tim Buckley a good run for their money in the Weird Leftfield Steeplechase. It's  a record that's endured too. It still sounds just wonderful.

And here's the single which came from it. The Greatness & Perfection of Love. A song that was altogether too magical, nuanced and wonderful for Daytime Radio but will always be a hit in the heads of those that know.
