Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark, who soon became OMD, and little wonder, appeared in the charts and on Top of the Pops during 1980. They weren't orthodox in a New Wave sense. Warm pullovers, nice shirts and in Andy McClusky they had a frontman who you could easily imagine inviting round for tea at your Grannie's. But Messages, their first hit was genuinely unsettling.
