A couple of weeks ago David Roback of Rain Parade, Opel and Mazzy Star passed. The most specific of musicians capable of conjuring up quite wonderful spacy, out of world experiences. Coincidentally his death coincided with the release of a record that seems to epitomise the widespread influence his records had on a certain strain of psychedelic, Indie rock. The debut album from Tan Cologne, Cave Vaults on the Moon in New Mexico.
Each track on the record unwraps at the same, slow, measured pace as Roback's songs did. There's no sense of urgency here. Just a sure, stoned, assured momentum that makes the listen an altogether pleasant and comfortable one. Cave Vaults is not just reminiscent of Roback's work, but also of fellow travellers, Neil Young, The Doors, Allah Las, Shana Cleveland and Warpaint.
Tan Cologne, essentially a duo, Laura Green and Marissa Macias have been through the desert on a horse with no name and captured all the wide eyed, out of world wonder that such a journey implies. Cave Vaults on the Moon in New Mexico, is the result. It's altogether cool.
