For someone who was never exactly an enormous star during his own career, Harry Nilsson has certainly cast a shadow since, particular as an Indie avatar. Anyone wishing to project a sense of personality, from Sufjan Stevens to Adam Green to Father John Misty it seems has been anxious to crib from his songbook.
The latest artist I've chanced upon in this respect is young Canadian Micah Erenberg who relased his second album Love is Gonna Get You late last year. Erenberg has developed a persona that's slightly cutesy but clearly questing in the way Nilsson himself always seemed to be. And he's very much questing for love.
This results in a warm, touching record. Adorned mostly by Erenberg's own personality with only the simplest of musical accompaniments. He's playing soon in the upstairs bar of a small bar near me and I'll make a point of going along, His is a cool talent.
