Haley Blais second album Wisecrack starts with one of the best songs I've heard all year. Soft Spot For Monarchs is a song of emtional and spiritual release. Mary Margaret O'Hara reborn. It;s a keeper and I'll be playing it again and again in the coming months.
Wisecrack doesn't quite maintain this ridiculously high standard. But it's a fine album despite slipping into slightly generic, young lady with gyutar making gentle, melodic statements of self assertion. Sophie Bridgers territory.
Nothing really speaks in tongues like Mary Margaret used to in the way that Soft Spot For Monarchs did, But this is a cool record. It should put Haley on the map. If there's any justice.
