Albums of the Year # 97 Special Friend - Wait Until The Flames Come Rushing in

The kind of thing I love chancing upon. Special Friend are just that.  'Parisian indie-pop scene in full bloom.' The kind of thing that's been worth keeping an eye on since Brian Jones and Francoise Hardy first set eyes on one another.

Lee & Nancy, Beat Happening, Yo La Tengo, The Pastels, Galaxie 500,early MBV,  Olden Yolk. Whatever happened to Olden Yolk? There's plenty of precedent for Wait Until The Flames Come Rushing in, Special Friend's second album. But that doesn't make it's winsome charm any the less immediate or  thrilling.

The sound of indie guitars jangling and male and female voices harmonising off key. This conforms completely to generic formulae but that's what makes it all work so perfectly.

Playing London with Swansea Sound this week, Special Friend are a band that know their indie lore. Hanging round with your special friends at that special age, which now it seems can last for a lifetime  Wait Until The Flames Come Rushing in is spring bursting into bloom on the Left Bank. Time to get on your breton top on and adjust your bob and shades.
