The kind of record I've probably been secretly wanting to hear without knowing it in 2024.Now I'm listening to it every day. Clued in by its appearance in the lower reaches of numerous end of year rundowns.Glasgow spawned Still House Plants and their extraordinary third album If I Don't Make It I Love U.
It's experimental, jarring and startling. In the way that Slint and Life Without Buildings records were and are. It shifts and surprises and makes you wna to listen to it again. It makes me want to see them live. Or read This is Memorial Device again. More records should be like this in their restlessness and drive.
This is a Post Punk record. A much derided word. Too many poor, imitative records have gone out under that name in the last few years with the end goal being a high slot on one of the Glastonbury stages rather than the creation of great Art. This, rarely is the real deal. Brave, exploratory and consistently exciting. If you received a gift token for Christmas this year, this woud pay back the investment with interest.
