One of the odder albums I've come across in 2025.Mermaid Chunky's second album slif, slaf, slof is pure delight. Visual artists Freya Tate and Moina Moin combine to fabricate a playful shifting sea on a set of unconventional percussive instruments. It feels like wandering round a modern art gallery installation in the company of small children. An exhibit that is by turns bewildering, barmy and enchanting.
You don't often come across records like this. Which are so freeform, genuinely idiosyncratic and difficult to pin down. They're often records made by women and express the indefinable qualities of femininity. The Raincoats, The Slits, Roches, Kleenex. Now Mermaid Chunky.
There's something incredibly joyous and celebratory about slif, slaf, slof . It's like a childhood reel, a kaleidoscope, mazes, Twister. A series of party games. Musical statues. Musical chairs. This record is sheer thrill.
