One of thise wonderful, comic set piece endings for which Coe is rightly treasured and celebrated by devotees. It needs to be experienced rather than described by the likes of me giving away spoilers on blogs such as this. I loved rereading this 30 years or so since I made its acquaintance. It made me fancy tucking into another Coe.
