Song(s) of the Day # 3,559 Misery Prize

Misery Prize are a threepiece from Yorkshire. They exist in a proud tradition. That wry, slightly bitter but darkly humorous tradition, kickstarted by John Cooper Clarke and The Fall more than anyone else.

I like Misery Prize. I like their debut album Saints of Obscene. They are eclectic. But not in an anoying way like Kaiser Chiefs. They are closer to Pulp than Yard Act.

Saints of Obscene is notable for its variety more than anything else.It jumps from mood to mood and focus in the way that Different Class did. And un this respect I found it most arresting.

It comments on the sad land that British people are obliged to live in and deal with. Post BREXIT Britain. It might be the saddest world there's ever been.  It concerns itself with the  same kind of thing that Sleaford Mods and IDLES records do. But in a very different way.

It's a bitter album but not an embittered one. There's a key difference. It's not angry. It's wry. It's what makes this record such a good one. Misery Prize are immediately ones to watch.
