Song(s) of the Day # 3,554 Marnie Stern

Marnie Stern's The Comeback Kid. A remarkable record and statement which initially I took the briefest listen to and thought was not for me, but for a younger audience than my ears, but which I returned to and persevered with, It's a highly impressive album which deserves to be listened to.

Stern has been away for ten years which is strange as she sounds like a ingenue, trailblazer arriving on the scene like an unknown comet making its first appearance in the sky. The music is a rush frankly. If you neeed to put a label on it it would probably be Infantilism of the sort favoured by The Shaggs or The Raincoats.

It's a brash relentless tide of  ultra-energetic guitar based ejaculations, shrieks and squeals. It needs listening to in its entirety to be fully appreciated. For some it will be an instant album of the year.

The Comeback Kid creates a word of bouncy castles, fairground rides where adult is not allowed. That it maintains its extraordinary vim and ceaseless vigour for its entire half hour run is testament to its invention.

It's infantile sure. Defiantly and proudly so. That''s the core of it's appeal and brilliance . At times here the songs whip themselves up into a state of such giddy intensity that you fear you're going to have a fizzy pop overdose on your hands and a madcap siren soundtracked race to the local hospital might be called for.

The Comeback Kid never lets up and once its finally over your first instinct is the one you had in childhood when you'd experienced a breakneck amusement park slide. To race up the stairs again and experience it all again. All in all breathless inspired and highly, but highly impressive. I haven't heard anything like it all year.

  1. OK, I'm going in! I have admired, rather than loved, her previous albums, so hadn't rushed to listen to this. She has a very particular guitar style that is both impressive and grating, I have found. Let's check this one out!
