Personal Long Players # 8 Patti Smith - Horses

After Television, or perhaps at round about the same time came Patti Smith and Horses. The two albums seem to go together even though their dates of release were two years apart. It's the definitive Patti release, just as Marquee Moon is the definitive Television one, even though she's done plenty of utterly timeless stuff since.

Like Marquee Moon it's a statement of being, in this case female being. Patti was something of a tomboy but she was and is all woman. In many ways it's a definitive album with a definitive opening statement: 'Jesus died for somebody's sins. But not mine...' Just as Marquee Moon set off with See No Evil's 'What I want. I want now...' What more could you want.

Both records fulfilled all the promises of their opening declarations and more. They're both still gifts that keep on giving a few years short of fifty years on. Patti is still working and still striving. She's a true inspiration. An artist.
