The marvellously named Meril Wubslin have just released a fiery and tangled Folk album called Alors Quoi which demands more attention than it's likely to receive. Dark, intoned with evident commitment and belief, it stirs the blood or certainly stirred mine and I've come back to it on a number of occasions over the last few weeks.
Meril Wubslin is not a woman, as you might immediately assume, but a trio.based in Lausanne and Brussels. On Alors Quoi they build up a proper head of steam on track after track, using the French tongue to splendid effect, the record has a thick and magical intensity.
The album has such a spiritual intensity that you feel the nusicians very much in the room with you. They work together with deeply focused intent. One to turn to if you're seeking a 'now for something completely different' moment of uncanny concentrated fervour.
