A set of groups who you almost certainly won't have heard of but with a sound, that if you're of a certain age and disposition, you should be very familiar with. Bands sounded like this from 1983 onwards. British bands, Antipodean bands, American bands. Some had larger profiles. R.E.M., The Go Betweens, The Smiths. Some were only known in their home towns and adjacent neighborhoods. Here's a run through a fine compilation from last year that anthologised and itemised several of these small and wonderful moments from lost American towns, so long ago. Starting with The Reverbs. Like so much here, this should have been bigger than it was. Sounding not unlike an older brother to The High's equally excellent Box Set Go.
