An intense but radio friendly sound . Editors came out of Birmingham twenty years after Joy Division had first driven their van beyond the Manchester city limits and sounded like they'd processed that band's vision and made it palatable.
This has its moments, but after a while you feel you've heard what they have to say and it doesn't really cut through and draw blood so much as making an impassioned soundtrack to a drive through hilly and inspiring terrain in an aerodynamic, modern car, Lines like 'Retreat, retreat and meet me at the Quayside...' sound faintly ridiculous. But it's a record companies' dream.
