500 Greatest Albums of the 1980s ... Ranked! # 344 The Church - Heyday

 


Piomeering Australian jingling janglers. They had some wonderful moments, Unguarded Moment. Under The Milky Way. For me they rather lost out in the rush where I nailed my allegiance to The Triffids and Go Betweens masts between '84 and '86. The Church had a dreaming, melodic sound and Steve Kilby a strong songwriter who clearly owned a few Byrds records.

Listening to Heyday just now, Kilby leans towards Grant McLennan in ters of his writing style. The Church lose out to Triffids and Go Betweens when it comes to going for the jugular. Their songs lack the lightning rod rhythm section hat a truly great band requires. But this is certainly pleasant, the most damning adjective,
