Iguana Death Cult are movers and shakers on the Rotterdam Rock Scene. Rotterdam seems like it must be a pretty good place to live right now if music is a big thing for you. I certainly come across more interesting Dutch bands from Rotterdam than Amsterdam right now. Or indeed anywhere else in Holland right now.
IDC's latest album Echo Palace is a pretty groovy thing. It's urgent and funky and inventive and sounds primarily like two bands. Talking Heads between 1979 and 1983 and Parquet Courts between 2016 and now.
There's just one problem. They sound very, very much between 2016 and now. And though that's a pretty great thing, it became an inescapable itch that I just couldn't scratch, despite how good the record is. A band needs to be more like itself than it's influences at some point during its run and that never happened during Echo Palace.
