1983 Singles - # 32 The Waterboys

 


The Waterboys came to my attention with Girl Called Johnny, in 1983. An almost but not quite hit that sounded not quite like anything around it, or indeed anything else they did thereafter. It's a song that stands in its own place. I can't think of anything to compare it too.

It's a tribute to Patti Smith, the extraordinary choice of youth she documents in Piss Factory, the train she got on and the example and inspiration it sets us all to make something of our lives.

Mike Scott went on a tangent from this afterwards, most specifically into the mystic, the Gaelic. There was much to admire and wonder at coming but Girl Called Johnny was as good as anything he ever did,
