Sometimes you come across bands and records that if they didn't exist someone like me would need to make them up and bring to your notice.
Latest case in point are Half Stack fivepiece our of Oakland CA, who met up at UC Santa Cruz. They're a little bit Country, a little bit Indie Rock & Roll.
With female and male singers taking turns to spin tales of life in smalltown America Half Stack's third album Sitting Pretty is pure , laidback electric joy on the open American highway. Dinosaur Jr, Pavement, Guided By Voices, Kurt Vile, hooking up with Courtney for one more jam. Lawrence of Felt at his most laconic even.
The influence of all of the bands and acts just mentioned above are readily evident on every track of Sitting Pretty. But the joy of listening to the record as it gets into its stride on puts its feet on the gas is that it doesn't matter a jot. This is art for art's sake.
Thanks yet again to Darren Jones for directing me here, Another neat little recird which has made my day. It's always great coming across another group of folk who do what they do just because its there. Whatever reason is there.
Glad you like it, Bruce! Had it on again yesterday. Have to tell you about the new Truth Club album, too. I've been waiting for it, but still managed to miss it on Friday. Rectifying now! Very 90s guitar band sound. It's very good, despite not including one of my favourite singles of the year, It's Time.
ReplyDeleteThanks Darren. I'm onto the Truth Club record. It's good. Reminded me of Pavement without the sense of humour for some reason. Quite a few interesting records around at the moment.
ReplyDeleteYes, I was listening this morning and there was a definite Pavement sound to it.
