Grumpy. Nobod'sy favourite of the Seven Dwarves. But a canny band from Brooklyn. They swagger and sway in the queasy Southern sunlight on latest album Unfindable Ring a record which draws from the likes of Big Thief and Wednesday and feels rather 'Now'.Singer and songwriter Heaven Schmitt has a lilting presence. 'I'm so hapy I could die' she intones on opener title track. I'm not sure about that but I'm more than content to listen on.
Occasionally this tips over into a queasy, giddy recklessness as if the whole thing is about to fall apart but the incoherence is clearly deliberate and has a giddy steeliness throughout which is rather impressive. Thanks once more to Darren Jones (Starbuck to his friends) for nudging me here.
