1981 Singles # 6 Adam & the Ants

Stuart Goddard had finally seen his moment and seized it in 1980, moving from a cult concern and a slightly dubious one in some respect to Top of the Pops and the cover of Smash Hits, where he remained for the next couple of years, Pop Royalty.

This had only made # 48 in the singles chart in 1980, so it was re-released and not surprisingly got all the way to # 2 second time round. The Ants from there went to Prince Charming, Ant Rap and so on. Pantomime by comparison witht heir feral and edgy initial hits. The cool kids scratched their name off their pencil cases. Still, it says something about those years that this was pretty much the biggest band of that period. They were odd and quite wonderful times for Pop Music.
