50 Days of R.E.M. # 26 Gardening At Night

Perhaps the first R.E.M. song that was genuinely their's which may be why they played it when they were inaugarated into The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. It has all of the characteristic mystery, enigma and contradiction that they worked on and honed in the albums that followed.

The version recorded on Chronic Town has Stipe's vocals almost completely buried in the mix. I prefer the more upfront recording released on the Best Of  IRS  compilation released a few years later. In any case, a thing of beauty. About a man who used to garden at night apparently. Here's the Hall of Fame performance. Bill Berry came back for the occasion.
