50 Days of R.E.M. # 20 Nightswimming

Nightswimming feels like the awareness of encroaching age and the way that memory begins to haunt your perspective at a certain stage in life. Looking back on the early days of the Athens scene and skinny dipping late at night with friends. In Michael Stipe's words, 'a kind of innocence that's either desperately clung onto or obviously lost.'

Just Michael Stipe and Mike Mills from the band on this one. Written originally in preparation for Out of Time by Mills, he never thought it amounted to much being essentially circular and non-developed in structure. But something about it inspired Stipe and the string arrangement by John Paul Jones and the oboe coda played by Deborah Workman make this altogether satisfying, almost literary in terms of its texture.
