Robert Christgau is probably best know for the succinct, paragraph length album reviews he wrote for many years for Village Voice. Here he gets slightly more verbose, for the Dolls, not necessarily to more telling effect. I would say that Nick Kent does a better job in capturing the essential magic of the band in his collection The Dark Stuff as he throws himself into the task with the same thrilled abandon as they did. Christgau, as is his wont, maintains his customary perspective of academic scrutiny, and it seems slightly odd. This was a band who were meant first of all to be enjoyed.
