Song of the Day # 2,343 Jimmy Bowen

In Barry Levinson's 1982 Coming of Age classic Diner, Daniel Stern, the Shrevie character chastises his wife Beth, (Ellen Barkin), for putting his records back on the shelves in the wrong order. It's a telling moment, pinpointing an essential difference between the ways that men and women tend to think about music. Shrevie is utterly in the wrong of course. It's quite despicable really. A refusal to grow up, particularly as he is now married and want to have any understanding of his wife and her needs. Later in the same movie he namedrops this song in conversation with one of his like-minded pals. You are really not supposed to like these guys I imagine. They actually love themselves and each other more than they love anything else for the most part, with one notable exception. The film is very good at identifying. why they resolutely want to keep on behaving in this way. It's one to watch and re-watch every few years.
