Song(s) of the Day # 4,251 Craig Finn

Woke up it was a Canterbury Morning and the first thing that I saw, Was the latest Craig Finn album Always Been.  So I listened to that. Plus Ca Change, Plus le Meme Chose. 'Pissing off a petty vengeful god.'

Finn is pictured on the cover of the album. It doesn't seem like san image that would make the impartial feel like coughing up hard earned. No frills. Shades. White top. Baseball cap. American everyman. There's a sadness about the songs here. The clock of life ticking downwards towards the grave but Finn is as caring about the words he uses to describe the realities of existence and how we do all we can to squeeze the last juice out of existence.

These are finely wrought pen portraits The man can write. And what  he writes about is life. He's outgrown the obvious reference points Bruce Springsteen and The Replacements and deserves to be seen on his own terms. He's a craftsman. A storyteller in the Great American Tradition of Mark Twain, John Steinbeck, John Cheever and Raymond Carver
