It's fair to say that Brooklyn's Renata Zeiguer is an eclectic artist. Her debut album, Old Ghost, just out, readily attests to that. So do the playlists she posts on Spotify. Taking in Tropicalia, classic Jazz singers and Sixties Pop, the common denominator of her tastes, (if there is one), is a sense of lightness and understated daring.
Old Ghost demonstrates these characteristics only too clearly. Although perhaps it might be classified as Indie, it's actually too inventive to be popped easily in that particular box. She's really closer to Carmen Miranda or the soundtrack to sixties soundtracks of Star Trek than Pavement. Anyhow, it's a cracking record.Perhaps the fact that Zeigeur is also the daughter of Argentine and Filipino parents and had childhood classical training where her inspirations were Debussy and Prokofiev are further markers for the eclectic music she creates. Maybe Regina Spektor, who shared her New York upbringing is the best comparison point of all. Old Ghost, is certainly a splendid starting point for Zeiguer and it will be very interesting to see where she chooses to go next!
